Hong Kong Welcome cafe at Kingston Library
Every Wednesday, Kingston Library becomes home to the Welcome Café, a vibrant weekly gathering attended by around 80 members of the Hong Kong community.
Hosted on the library’s closed day, the café has grown into a welcoming space for people who have relocated from Hong Kong and are building new lives in the UK.
It is a place to form friendships, practise English, learn how to navigate life in the UK, and share conversation over a cup of tea.
The Welcome Café was originally established to support those arriving from Hong Kong seeking refuge, offering signposting, advice and connection.
Through a strong partnership with Migrant Advocacy Service, it has grown into an integral part of many people’s weekly routine.
As attendance increased, so too did the range of support on offer. Weekly guest speakers now cover topics such as accessing healthcare, applying for schools, understanding the mortgage process and other practical aspects of life in Kingston. Kingston Adult Education provides English classes throughout the morning, supported by dedicated volunteers and the ongoing expertise of Migrant Advocacy Service.
Alongside its weekly programme, the Welcome Café also celebrates key cultural moments, including Lunar New Year. During this time, the community comes together to share food, stories, crafts and activities for all ages.
Families join in, traditions are honoured, and the space is filled with warmth, laughter and a strong sense of belonging.
