Kingston libraries welcome all children and young people! Our seven libraries each have children’s areas and teen sections, and you can get a library card at any age. even babies can have their own cards! It is free to join and free to borrow, and there are no overdue charges on children’s books. We also have seating and tables for you to rest, read and study.

We have books for all ages:

  • Board books for babies and toddlers. These sometimes get a bit chewed, but that’s ok! They help little ones practice turning pages and look at pictures. Some have different textures and sliders

  • Picture books to share with toddlers and young children. These are brilliant to cuddle up and read together at bedtime (or any time!)

  • Early reader books for learning to read. These are at varying levels and help build confidence as a child’s reading improves

  • Junior fiction books for more confident readers

  • Picture books for older children. The most popular section in the library at the moment! These include comic books and graphic novels for children

  • Information books. Whether you’re looking for information to do some science or history homework or want to read more about cooking or dinosaurs we have lots of topic books to choose from.

  • Teen/YA books. Secondary school-aged children might like to check out this separate section of the library which is a bridge between the children’s and adult fiction sections. They include manga and graphic novel titles as well as non-fiction aimed at supporting health and wellbeing in the teenage years.

If you can’t find the book you’re looking for on the shelf, someone else may have borrowed it. Speak to a member of staff and they can put a free request on it for you, and we will let you or your parent/carer know when it has arrived and is waiting for you to collect. You can also place book requests yourself using the library catalogue.
